KelTec Sub 2000
For those who remember, 1999 was marked by cynicism since most of the globe was uncertain about Y2K, which was just around the corner. The KelTec team toiled assiduously on the Gen I version of the KelTec Sub 2000 as clocks, Blackberries, and PCs switched from 1999 to 2000.
The Sub 2000 would receive the “2000” designation and would be formally released the following year. The Sub 2000 would deviate from conventional designs, having lines and features not typically found on firearms from this era, and certainly not at this price point, thus it makes sense.
Things started to change as time went on. The KelTec Sub 2000 needed a redesign as well since tactical firearm trends changed and the KelTec Sub 2000’s squared-off, blocky forend had no place to attach any of the gear or accessories.
In 2015, the KelTec Sub 2000 Gen II became available. The new model provided the market with some much-needed form and functionality refreshing.
Additionally, KelTec continues to use the Sub2000 building style that has become popular in recent years. I will say that the Sub 2000 Gen II feels far better overall than the original Sub 2000. Additionally, I think the building is more sturdy than the forearm portion of the KelTec KSG that we previously assessed. This might be as a result of the Sub 2000 not requiring the movement of any sizable polymer portions.
The pistol grip, chamber area cover, and forearm of the Sub2000 are all constructed using KelTec’s two-half clamshell design. As I’ve already said, I’m not as bothered by the implementation of this concept as I am by KelTec’s KSG. When locked in the firing position, the forearm is highly rigid and does not flex.
The pistol grip’s magwell is the only area of this design that might be viewed as weak, and when compared to other mag wells in the same location, there is always some flex when pushed. When the magazine is inserted, the flex completely disappears from this region.
